Ok This is going to be a long rant but then again, I am not sure if am even going to publish it.
I would think this school year would have been a little different and I am not thrown face first into AIDs infested shit but ooh when i though I got around it, it’s just thrown at me. Right now I am taking a internship class. I was told it would find me an internship but ooh once again, nothing but a lie. When the class started I was given a job listing from 2009 and told found a job…. am thinking “ok…. this is how it should go?”. The the teacher tells the that doing an internship is a luxury. which makes little to no sense only because it is a requirement for many design jobs. They don’t say it but they want you to have a few under your belt. Now am thinking after this sudden change “O.K. it can’t be this random, she got to have something more recent because well this list is from 2009. It can’t still be in used by the college for my major…. ?”
I was wrong, ooh so very wrong. there is more. The only two requirements I was told at the time was that I need to do a minimum of 120 hours and that it had to be with in my major. It turns out I only was given 3 weeks to find a internship but the school not provide one other then the outdated list. Now that was Day One, you could hope it get better afterwords right?……… yea nope. On the second day of the class we meet up and it turns out I can’t get a paid internship kinda. The professor said that but really if I could get some kind of pay, bet your ass I am going to take it, Living in NYC is not cheap. What makes it worse is that she said we shouldn’t take any internships in which I telecommute, which is just working at home. She said I need to be in the office and treat it like a real job. Funny she want to say treat it like a real job but because of some last minute changes I am forced to see here every other week meaning I must take a half the day off to see her in class in the morning and tell her about my time working there. This means I am spending less time working but more time in a classroom talking. This doesn’t happen in the real world unless I have a probation officer to report to…
Now were in day 3, I have sent out a dozen or so resumes and only one gotten get back to me asking for a link to my work. I didn’t hear back from them after I give them the link and since there was no phone number to call I got to assume they didn’t want me. Two more people gotten a internship, but I couldn’t get a interview. During the class time she was telling everyone they need to learn some coding to make their skills more diverse. which makes sense, that’s why I started in print but I moved to web and then motion graphics. I can pretty much use all of the adobe suite with very little problem and can move a project from print to web to video with ease. She is finally saying something that made sense to me.
After she let the ones that had a internship/interview go, she sat down with myself and a few others that were still looking for like an hour and she said something that blown my mind and not in the good way. She told me I should stop looking for web internships but I should look into graphic design. She now contradict her self in a matter of minutes, not days not hours but minutes. She told me I should find it easy to get a internship because I have so many different skills…. I don’t know what makes her think that. I have looked around and many jobs want a coding language that I don’t know mainly because of two reason: one: some times I can’t find a good tutorial or web program to teach me, I am in is just horrible on my own. I think its both I take blame for the first part only because sometimes it’s just hard to learn from reading books or using forums to figure out my coding problem. Some people can do it but or me its is not so easy. I know PHP is more backend but I would have loved a class on that and Javascript back when I came into college earlier or maybe my second year but NO I got a lot of classes that were mainly outside of my major. No one could or wanted to explain why a web major was talking 8 print and advertising classes but only 3 web classes over a 2 year period? I done most of my studying with…… well videos explaining more things to me then a teacher.
ehh…. Here is come music that makes me think.
